More than a wheatfield

DREAMWORLD NORTH - There is something about The Far Away, or The Wheatfield, that brings out the creativity in people. Now, AM Radio, creator of the build, will hold a contest. Participants need to submit both a photograh and text. One lucky winner will recieve L$10,000 and a real AM radio.

Radio said that the contest was "driven by my observation of the people who visit the field, and the Flickr feed – seeing what people write. It’s fascinating. They don’t write about The Wheatfield – they write about someone they love, or an experience they had in a landscape like this. And they tell me the place inspires them.”

So Radio said he wanted to spur an activity that already was happening.

”To engage people and have a contest is a way of thanking everyone. Obviously I can’t give 10k inden dollars to everyone who stops by. But a writing contest feels like a fun way to engage and collaborate with my visitors.”

He himself might be guilty of at least partly inspiring people to write by often writing short texts and poems to his own Flickr pictures.

”I have that habit of writing things in my Flickr descriptions,” he admits. ”I think it’s fun, and it also helps me understand myself and why I made a wheatfield my home in SL.” He calls it an exploration.

”Short phrases and small poems can be like sketches – thumbnail drawings in preparation of a larger idea. I hope my work shares something of itself with the visitors, or allows them to see something in a new way,” said

When it comes to other peoples’ texts, they help him see new dimensions of The Wheatfield.

”They help me sketch and add to the larger idea of what it is,” Radio said, and finds it funny to think it’s ”all just mathematics representing 3d space. It’s how we choose to percieve it that lets the magic happen.”

The radio you can win is designed by the Red Cross for trekking. ”I often go on trips to help people. I find myself in the woods in Montana or in New Orleans without electricity. This radio can charge a phone with a hand crank, and pull in shortwave government frequencies as well as AM and FM. So it goes along with the theme of helping people – and getting out there.”
