When art gets ugly

PLACE – An unusual exhibition opens this Saturday the 5th: «The Evil Nemesis Show: Two Artists – One Style», and promises ”stolen concepts, jealousy, name-calling and incomprehensible jargon”.

”It’s easy to see why he calls me his evil nemesis,” Poppy said, pointing to the pairs of pictures that decorate the gallery walls. These two photographers share a style that’s so similar it’s hard to tell who has taken which pictures. They’ve both specialized in close up shots of flowers, and for this exhibition they’ve paired the most obvious examples.

And, for the fun of it, they’ve put cardboard pictures of themselves under each work of art, with speech bubbles where they throw insults at each other. For example: «Why you, I oughta…» «What? Have an original idea?»

”As you can see, our styles are way too similar,” Story said, pointing to a cardboard figure of himself saying he’ll consult lawyers.

"I didn’t make this up. I’ve actually seen SL artists consult lawyers,” he grinned.

Story remembers clearly the first time he encountered Poppy’s pictures. He was quite new to SL, and trying to get involved in its art world.

"I took my pictures to show a fellow in the Cetus Gallery District. He looked at my best stuff, and seemed underwhelmed. 'Oh yeah, it looks like Autopilotpatty’s work. Her show opens on Tuesday.’ I was crestfallen,” Story said. Naturally, he went to the show, and was "knocked out by Patty’s work.”

"When Douglas showed me one of his pictures, I thought he was joking with me and had taken a pic of one of mine,” Poppy said. "But I kept quiet until he finished talking. Then it turned out it was his.”

From day one, they also hit it off on a personal level. "It’s her red hair, really. I’m that easy,” Story said.

" Pfff, it’s my photography,” Poppy replied.
