Glenn Linden talking to the Second Life Mentor group

SUNSET BEACH - Linden Lab is preparing to be inundated with new residents tomorrow night with the airing of CSI:NY on CBS television. In addition to preparations on the technical side, they have prepared their growing mentor group for a wave of newbies to sweeep into Second Life fueled by the hit television series.

As reported here earlier this month, CBS will air a special episode of CSI:NY in which actor Gary Sinise's character investigates a crime by traveling into Second Life. According to Glenn Linden, "The episode will include about 15 minutes of video filmed in SL. The CSI team will chase a villain into SL and pursue clues left behind in SL."

During the episode, at least two 30 second promo shots encouraging people to come to Second Life through a special CSI Second Life Registration website designed by the Electric Sheep Company will air. It is possible that the spots will also air during Friday night's CSI:Miami.

To prepare for the influx of newbies, the Lindens called a special meeting today for their mentor group- trained volunteers who help new residents get started. At the meeting, Glenn Linden had the following to say.

"I was approached in late August by Electric Sheep (ESC), one of our developers, who told us CBS was planning to include Second Life in a show this fall. That show was CSI:NY, and it will be airing tomorrow night. The writing was done by Anthony Zuiker, producer of CSI, who turns out to be a big fan of SL. The Oct 24th episode of CSI:NY will include SL as part of the show, and actively promote viewers logging into SL to help solve the mystery."

Glenn Linden then went on to say "ESC did all the building and filming in SL for the show. *All* Linden Lab has to do is be able to manage the traffic we think the show will drive."

The difficulty in preparing for something of this nature is largely is that LL doesn't know what to expect for traffic as nothing like this has ever been done before.
