DREAMS EAST—This year's Dreams Fair is underway It brings together several groups devoted to health and education. Several events scheduled for this week aim to raise awareness as well as offer support to individuals with certain ailments. Fair coordinator The Sojourner said, “I feel that there is too much attention paid to the monetary gains that can be made in Second Life and that the other qualities that make Second Life unique are not as visible. The participating [Dreams Fair] groups have recognized the personal value that comes with ‘life’ on the platform.” Sojourner, a multiple stroke survivor said she recognized the recovery value within weeks of joining. "I feel that the Second Life community needs to become aware that these groups exist. Hopefully, it will deepen their Second Life experience,” she said.

This is the third year for the fair. Sojourner explained that as a member of Touchstone, a teaching group in SL, in April of 2005, an opportunity for an event on FairChang arose and they thought it would be fun for the fledgling group to do a fair. Jase Byrne invited a number of cultural, health-oriented, and educational groups to have a place at the fair to advertise their groups. He also invited the Lindens to participate in a Linden Dunk. "All 28 of them, Philip included, took part.” Sojourner said. “Not long after that, Touchstone dissolved. In March of 2006, the Dream Travelers acquired the sim, Dreams. In April [2006], we had our first Fair on the move.” The two week fair features over 60 educational booths and over 80 events. Last year's fair featured a fundraiser for stroke survivors. This year, the focus is on education and support; however, much of the fair’s theme is similar to prior years. Sojourner said, “On Friday, as is tradition, we will again have the Linden Dunk.” The Dreams Fair is sponsored every year by the Dream Travelers group, the activity and support group devoted to ShockProof (a group of stroke survivors) |
