Exporting content from SL to other grids possible

Twin Orientation Island

Recently, a video on YouTube, "Hitler Explains Second Life", earned some notice in the community thanks to its lampooning of Philip Linden and recent Second Life events.

Some of the commentary has been positive, some negative, but regardless of the nature, it's gotten attention for its creators, Magrathean Technologies.

Some confusion, however, about the company’s services arose, especially regarding their capability to export 3D data out of Second Life.

Yes, Magrathean Technologies can export objects and even entire simulators from SL.

They've released a free proof of concept of this on their website, featuring Orientation Island in a modern open source game engine that allows them to fill that entire newbie area with zombies, tanks and guns.

Magrathean's proven love of making fun of Second Life and their sense of humor carry on into the quickly-made game, especially noticeable during a cutscene where a building containing Second Life's servers explode in dramatic 3D.

It seems possible upon witnessing the videos that they recreated the sim using the game engine's tools, but a quick comparison confirms that down to the details, and barring a few minor mistakes that can be chalked up to technical issues with the surely still brand new process, the game's version of Orientation Island is exactly the same as the real one, which might allow those who have become frustrated with SL's poor beginner's experience to act out a little of their anger by shooting a shotgun and driving a tank.

The game also features new 3D technologies not available in SL, including high dynamic range lighting and advanced physics simulation, so it's not made with an altered Second Life client, according to Maxwolf Goodiffe, CTO of Magrathean.

This game has been a source of some controversy, however, as it uses the exported Orientation Island without Linden Labs's permission. Some residents have worried about this, thinking it could be another copybot, enabling people to steal IP from others in SL.

"We used Orientation Island as a parody," Goodliffe said. "Some Lindens are aware of the game, and we haven't been asked to take it down. If they ask, we'll take it down immediately. We just wanted to do something fun to prove that we could do exporting of entire sims. We're not going to steal anyone's content, or export it without full permissions, and we're not going to tell anyone else how we do this, so there's no need for anyone to freak out."
