Free journalism class to be held on April 26

LSJ STUDENT UNION -  The London School of Journalism (LSJ) will be celebrating their entrance into Second Life on April 26 with a day of events at http://slurl.com/secondlife/LSJ%20Student%20Union/163/134/42

The opening will start at 10 AM SLT/6 PM GMT. The schedule will be as follows:

10:00 – 11:00 AM SLT: A lecture on "The World of Freelance Journalism”
11:00 – 11:30 AM SLT: A question and answer session with the lecturer and an LSJ administrator
11:30 – 12:00 PM SLT:  Guest speaker, not known at press time.
12:00 – 12:40 PM SLT:  Poetry reading and announcement of winners of the competition.
12:40 PM SLT – Club opens for dancing


The poetry contest forms can be picked up and dropped off at the Public Relations Center at the SLURL above.  Deadline is April 26.  The contest is not limited to a particular style of poetry.  First place winner will receive L$4000; second place will receive L$1000.

Titan Thorne, SL Administrator for the LSJ,  “The real life LSJ has been running for 30 years and we’re one of the top online and post grad Journalism school in the UK.  We offer a large range of courses which can be found on our Website.”

Online courses consist of a Web delivery of syllabus and assignments with further communication through e-mail.  Lectures are provided online as well as in London for those able to attend.
 
“We are using SL as a medium for new students,” Thorne said.  “Although we are not offering full courses within SL as it might prove too complicated.  However every 2 weeks we offer people a free lecture on a host of topics.  This will be followed by a Q&A with our tutors and some sort of competition – whether it be poetry, writing, etc.”

“We are offering all SL members a 10% discount on our LSJ online courses,” Thorne added.

A shopping area called Learning Curve is available where students can purchase discounted items.

The owner, Michael Winckworth, was simply curious about it so he asked me to investigate and see if it was worth doing for both the students and ourselves. I decided it was, so we went

The Grand Opening was a huge success with many avatars from all around Second Life (R) coming and going throughout the day.
