Archbishop Desmond Tutu to address youth conference

A group gathers for the opening of the National Service Learning Conference, streamed live into the NMC sim, Teaching

TEACHING -  Today, Thursday the 10th and tomorrow, Friday the 11th, Global Kids will stream The National Youth Leadership Council 19th Annual National Service Learning Conference into both the Teen Grid and Main Grid (NSLC) in the NMC sim Teaching 

NSLC is being held in Minneapolis from April 9-12th, 2008. The NSLC is the largest gathering of youth and practitioners involved in the service-learning movement. Plenary sessions, forums and services projects are planned. 
 
Archbishop Desmond Tutu will be the keynote speaker. Tutu won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his faith and commitment for the future of South Africa.

Thursday, April 10th features speakers:
•    7:00 - 8:30 a.m. SLT:  Pedro Noguerra, author of “Unfinished Business: Closing the Racial Achievement Gap in Our Nation’s Schools”, an urban educator who advocates for public education.
•    8:45 - 10:15 a.m. SLT: Panel discussion with David Eisner, Henry Lozano, and Ronald Tschetter,
discussing evolving roles of civic community service.
•    11:45 - 1:15 p.m. SLT:  A workshop to explore the connection between hip-hop music, the spoken word and service learning.



Friday, April 11th features speakers:
•    7:00- 8:30 a.m. SLT:  Archbishop Desmond Tutu, human rights activist and Nobel laureate.
•    8:45 - 10:15 a.m. SLT:  Students respond to Archbishop Tutu’s address as well as discuss Jewish relations, Darfur and HIV/AIDS.
•    12:30 - 2:00 p.m. SLT: Tabitha Gkid will be presenting a workshop on using virtual worlds to promote service learning.  Global Kids, a New York non-profit group, will be featured in the presentation.
•    2:15 - 3:45 p.m. SLT:  Workshop “Youth in Media:  Leveraging Our Power.”  Explore the information received by the media and discuss how media and service can complement each other to make change.
