Red {an orchestra} will be heard in SL.

ONECLEVELAND - Don’t miss the first live orchestra performance in Second Life! Funkily named "Red {an orchestra}" will be premiering the first ever live digital simulcast of an American orchestra into a 3-D world on April 14 at 5:00 PM SLT at three sites in SL.

“That Red Guy” will be performed to a live audience in SL as well as in the Masonic Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio. The show is sponsored by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and with support from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, OneCommunity, the New Media Corsortium, Leonard Steinbach Cultural Technology Strategies, MediaAffect.com, JaredJared.com and the musicians of Red {an orchestra}.

Concert seating will be available at the Case Western Reserve University Amphitheater in OneCleveland or in the Machima Studio in Learning on the NMC Campus. Each seating area has a 50 avatar capacity. Each amphitheater will feature three screens for both a live video and audio experience. The central screen will stream the live performance while the side screens will show exciting images related to the concert.

Red’s artistic director and composer, Jonathan Sheffer ( Wolfgang Mankiewicz in SL) orchestrated and composed “That Red Guy.” Sheffer’s world premier “A Red Couch Floating in Lake Erie: A Symphony of Songs” will be performed. This new work features a libretto written by Cleveland poets and poems written about Cleveland. This is a tribute to Cleveland and is based on poems published by the Poets’ and Writer’s League of Greater Cleveland. The poems include one about Helen Keller experiencing a 1913 blizzard in Cleveland, and one about the only major league baseball player ever hit and killed by a pitch, in Cleveland.

The other pieces include the North American premier of Jonathan Sheffer’s “Romp: Concerto for Soprano Saxophone and Orchestra,” featuring Anders Paulsson of Sweden, the world-leading classical soprano saxophonist. And, “Six Preludes from the Well Tempered Clavier,” an orchestral transcription Sheffer composed from Bach’s masterpiece, “The Well Tempered Clavier” will also be performed.

This concert launches the grand opening of the virtual city of Cleveland and the Case Western Reserve University Campus known as OneCleveland.

Red {an orchestra} is using this concert experience in SL to explore ways of introducing new audiences to classical music. Their goal is to "REDefine classical music programming, to REDesign the concert experience, and REDiscover classical music."

The orchestra Red was founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 2001 by classical musicians and art patrons. Red tries to create imaginative musical programming by presenting music in collaboration with other artistic disciplines such as film, visual arts, opera, theater, poetry, and literature. At attempt to expand the audience of classical music, Red presents music with popular themes and in light of contemporary culture. Red is in the midst of its fifth successful season.
