SLNN Weekend Sports: Boxing gym lets fans slug it out tonight by Vox Mullen

SLNN Sports reporter Vox Mullen gets a punch with the left at Averlast gym.
TRUEBLOOD - Averlast gym is hosting a unique event this evening. For the first time, SL residents will be able to put on boxing gloves and slug it out with each other. Averlast owner Karine Koba is putting together this “audience participation match” to let casual fans experience the fun of boxing.
This match will be part of their regular Friday boxing card, which also includes a full slate of bouts, including the “battle royale” free-for-all featuring the regular boxers.
Fans are asked to arrive early to get gloves and basic training on how to box, for the 4:00 p.m. tournament. The wearing of Halloween costumes is also encouraged.
ICE HOCKEY JERICHO HILL - With opening night just over one week away, SL Hockey has finally got the majority of their teams solidified. Season four features a few missing stars, two new teams, and familiar faces in different uniforms.
In Sunday’s veteran redraft, Honoria Paine (who split time between the Whales and Moose last season) was the first selection overall, taken by the Cobras. Paine, an all-star in her rookie season last year, will bring defense and leadership to a Cobras team that struggled in season three.
Other top draft picks included: Bedtime Bobbysocks (2nd overall, to Wolves), Vivienne Coppola (Moose), Sugar Zuhrah (Whales), Tie Roux (Rebels), and Devon Molinari (IceLords).
Notably absent is last season’s MVP and top scorer Lobo Rodriquez, who has taking time off from hockey due to RL concerns.
The draft did have moments of controversy, when players not of the “official” draft list were called as draft picks. This caused confusion regarding the status of some high profile players, who did not make firm commitments to play the upcoming season.
Another argument was over an unwritten rule keeping SL partners on the same team. This arose when one partner was drafted, and later the other half of the partnership was chosen by a different team. A recent clarification states that partners will be treated as one player for drafting purposes.
SLHockey’s fourth season is slated to begin November 4th.
RACING MOOZ – RaceSL is claiming success in an 18-rider race test this week, in preparation for the upcoming MotoSL season. A new qualifying system, with four riders on the track at once via staggered starts, is allowing the process to be completed within 30 minutes. Previous MotoSL/FormulaSL events typically had less than ten participants on the track for races.
The Depo MotoSL Super Bike Series kicks off with Race 1 at PSU Raceway this weekend.
